Boat explosion victim IDed as Richard Murphy

The Gloucester Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who perished in an April 10 fire aboard a boat moored at Jordan Marina at Gloucester Point as 65-year-old Richard Lee Murphy.

GSO Capt. John Schick Jr. said Murphy had lived aboard the former shrimp boat for about three years.

Callers reporting the fire to the GSO reported hearing an explosion at about 10 p.m. and seeing the docked vessel fully engulfed in flames soon after. Responding firefighters found the victim after extinguishing the blaze.

It is believed that the refueling of an onboard generator was the main cause of the fire and Schick said there were no suspicious circumstances involved.

The victim was not immediately identified pending positive identification by the state medical examiner’s office.  ...
