Board tables distillery zoning proposal

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors tabled action Tuesday on a proposed zoning amendment to allow small-scale alcohol production as a by-right use in the downtown Village Mixed Use District. The vote was 4-1, with supervisor Amy Dubois dissenting.

The proposal calls for adding a definition for such a use to the zoning ordinance, requiring closure of such a facility between 2 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday, requiring an off-street loading dock and off-street parking, and limiting production to 5,000 gallons of wine or cider, 10,000 gallons of beer, and 36,000 gallons of distilled spirits annually. The planning commission recommended the change last week after a joint public hearing with supervisors.
