Board seeks other safety measures

The Gloucester Board of Supervisors voted to approve a request to VDOT to implement new safety measures at Woods Cross Roads during its meeting Tuesday at the colonial courthouse. This comes after the board voted not to accept funding for the installation of a Restricted U-Turn or RCUT at the dangerous intersection.

At the May 2 meeting of the board, a number of residents who live near the intersection voiced their disapproval for the RCUT. With an overwhelming number of those against the RCUT, the board voted to deny the project and instead decided to seek other solutions to improve the safety of the intersection.

In the approved request, the board asks VDOT to complete a speed study of the span of Route 17 at Woods Cross Roads, as well as reducing the speed limit in that area from 60 mph to 45 mph, and installing flashing yellow lights and a speed display sign on both sides of Route 17.
