The Mathews County Board of Supervisors finally reached consensus on a motion regarding Mathews Heritage Park during Tuesday night’s board meeting. The unanimous vote came five years after Conrad Hall donated nine acres of land on Billups Creek to the Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority for the park and six months after supervisor Jack White was appointed to mediate a resolution with adjacent property owners who object to it. The first part of White’s two-part motion calls for giving Friends of Mathews Heritage Park permission to access the park property by water in order to make repairs to the old house, rebuild the dock, and maintain the grounds. The second part instructs the planning commission to work on a change to the zoning ordinance to require a conditional use permit to establish a community park or playground rather than having such facilities as by-right uses.
