Board denies zoning request after receiving additional comments

Mathews supervisors Edwina Casey and Charles Ingram took exception to a decision by board chairman Jack White during the Aug. 22 meeting to allow public comment on a Gloucester couple’s request for a conditional use permit for a temporary reception facility.

The application was eventually denied, but not before the board allowed the matter to be the topic of public discussion.

Glebe resident Charles B. Haywood came forward during public comment period to request that the board deny the application for the CUP, which had been submitted in June by Gloucester residents Harvey and Sherri Hamm. The request was to allow the temporary reception facility on property they had purchased in the Glebe. The facility would be used for wedding receptions and similar events.

However, the matter had already been the subject of a public hearing in June, during which a number of Glebe residents came forward to argue against approving the facility.
