Board approves $1.34M increase in current budget

Mathews supervisors approved increases of $1.34 million to its current FY2026 budget at last Thursday’s board meeting, to a total of $37,490,623, or 3 percent above the budget originally approved in June. Following a hearing on the changes, the board approved the changes by a 3-2 margin. Outgoing supervisors Mike Walls and Dave Jones cast the dissenting votes, although they had approved a number of the increases in prior votes, including for school resource officers ($211,628), vehicle for the school resource officers ($117,668), IT services ($78,250), the county administrator’s salary and associated benefits ($12,128), and increases in the capital improvement plan budget of $150,000 for pipe repair at Mathews Elementary School, $130,000 for convenience center paving, $35,000 for generator repairs at Liberty Square, and $14,000 to repair the air conditioning in a containment unit on an animal control vehicle.
