Blueberry picking event raises $1,510 for GMHS

Eastfields Farms in Mathews concluded its 2019 pick-your-own blueberry season with a two-day fundraiser for the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society.

Diane and Peter Perina, owners of the blueberry business located in the Glebe section of the county, opened the blueberry field each weekend in July and August, selling berries by the pound.

The humane society weekend offered the final berries at half-price, and many customers dug deep and gave extra money. In all, the Perinas were able to donate $1,510 to GMHS.

A letter from the Perinas to April Martinez, executive director of GMHS, said, “The people who came and supported us are amazing. So many gave us so much beyond the cost of their berries picked.”

Peter Perina added, “The people are the unsung heroes” behind the company’s annual donation.
