Blue Devils win thriller over Red Devils heading into Conference 42 play

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ baseball team improved to 7-3 in the past week, after defeating the Lancaster Red Devils, 10-6, Friday night.

The game was a memorable one, as the Devils came out firing in the top of the first, going up by four. Starting pitcher Brian Owens held the Red Devils scoreless through three, until it was their turn to come out firing. In bottom of the fourth, the host Red Devils put up four runs to even the score. Two more in the fifth chased Owens out the game and put the Red Devils up by two.

Lancaster maintained its two-run lead until the visiting Blue Devils bats awoke in the top of the seventh. Aided by some defensive miscues, the Blue Devils scored six runs to jump ahead, 10-6. Reggie Johnson and Jalen Matthews started the spark for the Devils, and freshman Ethan Armistead ignited the fire as he cleared the bases with a double to the left field fence, giving the Devils a lead, and they never looked back.
