Blue Devils start season 1-2

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team kicked off the 2015-2016 season with matchups against Lancaster, Washington and Lee, and Rappahannock. The Devils posted a 1-2 record against the non-conference foes.

The Blue Devils started off on the road against the Lancaster Red Devils, a perennial Northern Neck powerhouse. After a slow start, some quick momentum allowed Mathews to sneak back into the game and come out at halftime up one, 24-23.

 Stuart Anderson and Reggie Johnson provided a spark in the beginning of the third quarter, and kept MHS in the game heading into the fourth down by four. Heading into the fourth, it came down to a game of free throws that the Blue Devils couldn’t handle, eventually falling, 61-53. Ethan Armistead and Anderson led Mathews in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Back-to-back games are always tough on a team, but this time the Devils were ready to go.
