Blue Devils rack up five wins in recent action; postseason starts May 24

The Blue Devils have had a busy couple of weeks on the diamond with the Mathews varsity baseball team going 5-0 in its last five games.

The Mathews Blue Devils defeated the Rappahannock Raiders on Wednesday, May 3 by a 9-0 margin. In the bottom of the first inning, the Devils struck first with two runs on a RBI single from Payton Blake giving them an early lead. In the bottom of the third, the Blue Devils put another run across the board with a sacrifice fly from Blake, giving Mathews a 3-0 edge. As the game went on it was like hitting was contagious with Jalen Matthews having three hits, Brent Smith and Blake with two apiece.

The week after, the Blue Devils faced Charles City, breezing by the Panthers by a 15-3 margin. The following day the boys faced the Lancaster Red Devils. The game went scoreless for the first couple innings, then the Blue Devils flipped a switch putting four runs across the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
