Blue Devils post wins over N’land, Lancaster

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team improved to 3-1 on the season following victories last week over Northern Neck foes Northumberland and Lancaster.

An early goal by Adam Wade began last Wednesday’s lopsided game against the visiting Northumberland Indians, a game Mathews won, 6-0.

Much of the game the ball stayed on Northumberland’s side of the field, making the soccer balls that did find their way to the Mathews defense easy work.  The majority of the goals were scored in the first half, and the scorers were Jalen Thomas, Jordan Bozza, Wade and Kevin Jenkins. In the second  half, two more goals were scored by Josh Miles and Jenkins. Two controversial yellow cards were given out to Zach Foss and Ricky Rutter, setting off some grumbling in the Mathews stands. But the cards didn’t slow them down because they both went back in and Foss had three shots on goal and Rutter had four.
