Blue Devils post pair of Tidewater District wins

The Mathews High School boys’ varsity basketball team posted a pair of Tidewater District wins in recent action, beating the visiting King William Cavaliers on Friday night, 72-65, and pulling out a win on the road Tuesday against West Point, 63-54. The JV Devils weren’t as fortunate, falling in both contests.

Mathews entered Friday’s contest against the Cavaliers looking for revenge for a loss the previous week. The Cavaliers fell behind in the early minutes due to the full-court pressure of the Blue Devils. A high number of King William turnovers allowed Mathews to jump out to a 12-point first-quarter lead, extending it to 23 at the half.

The Blue Devils became complacent with their lead, and King William took advantage of the more relaxed defense. A streak of three-point shots quickly shrank the lead to only four points.
