Blue Devils open season, look to build momentum

After a rainy start, the Mathews Blue Devils varsity baseball team’s season campaign finally began. The Blue Devils lost six seniors at the end of last season, leaving a young roster consisting of mostly underclassmen, with the exception of two seniors. While the team is still gaining experience, players have begun to adjust to their new roles and continue to improve each game. With a focus on learning and working together, the Blue Devils are looking to build confidence as the season moves forward. The Mathews Blue Devils baseball team fell on the road to the defending regional champion Northumberland High School Indians, 4-0, last Thursday, March 19, in the season opener. Freshman Brandon Hubbard started on the mound for the Blue Devils during his first high school game. The starting pitcher surrendered just three hits and one run over five strong innings, striking out seven and walking two Indian batters.
