Blue Devils go .500 for the week

The Mathews High School boys’ basketball team stayed at .500 in the past week by splitting a pair of conference games. The Blue Devils traveled to Middlesex on Jan. 6 in the most highly anticipated game of the year, and lost to the Chargers, 68-49.

The Devils came out flat and faced a 26-point deficit going into halftime. Poor rebounding and shooting proved to be the killer for the Devils, as the Chargers came out strong from the three-point line. The second half didn’t prove much better as the Devils lost the game by 19.

Cody Kelly led the way for the Devils with 16 points, and Taiwan Forrest followed with 11. The Devils hope to come back against the Chargers at home on Jan. 30. The Devils hoped to get back even hosting Chesterfield Community on Friday night. Due to grade issues, the Eagles only brought six players onto the court.
