Blue Devils gain momentum

After dropping its first three games, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team finally came out victorious on Monday night, picking up a non-conference win against the visiting Rappahannock Raiders, 66-62.

The Devils stepped up their efforts on the offensive and defensive ends, with freshman Elijah Willis providing a key offensive spark that Mathews needed for the victory. Willis was the leading scorer of the night, with 17 points. Cody Kelly provided a dominant presence on the glass, with 16 points to show for it. Other key scorers were Owen Cullison with 10, and Reggie Johnson with eight.

On Friday, in the Blue Devils’ home opener, Mathews dropped a 56-43 contest to the Lancaster Red Devils. The shots just weren’t falling for the Blue Devils, who provided a better defensive effort in this non-conference match up than the previous night at Northumberland.
