Blue Devils finish season with back-to-back wins

 

After a rocky 0-8 start to the 2014 season, the Mathews High School varsity football team ended the year on a positive note with victories in the squad’s final two games.

The season-ending win came last Thursday night at Ken Brown Field, with Mathews hosting the Middlesex Chargers on a cold, rainy evening. Mathews took an early lead and, although the Chargers tied up the score early in the fourth quarter, the Devils came right back to win in convincing fashion, 25-13.

The Devils took the opening kickoff and put together a 70-yard, six-and-a-half-minute drive, capped by senior Cody Correll’s 25 yard touchdown run. Mason Kent’s PAT kick gave Mathews a 7-0 lead.

Kent provided the spark for the next Blue Devil touchdown, picking off a pass late in the first quarter. Kent ended the day with two interceptions for the second time in two weeks.
