Blue Devils fall to 0-2

The Mathews High School varsity football team fell to 0-2 on the season following Friday’s 44-8 loss on the road to Lancaster, according to head coach Wes Griffith.

Mathews played the game with just 14 eligible players. Jonathan Monastyrly was the Blue Devils’ leading rusher with 103 yards on 12 carries. He also scored the only MHS touchdown. Garrett Applegate ran for 38 yards on eight carries and added the two-point conversion to round out the scoring for Mathews.

Ben Stroud was the other offensive standout for Mathews, gaining 53 rushing yards on eight carries. Massimo Mastromano led the defense with five tackles.

This Friday’s scheduled game against Northumberland was canceled as the Devils did not have enough healthy players to field a team, MHS athletic director Al Thomas announced Tuesday.
