Blue Devils drop opener

The Mathews High School boys’ basketball season got off to a disappointing start, as the varsity and junior varsity teams dropped their opening games on Monday night against Tabb High School in a non-conference matchup.

Short three returning starters, the varsity Devils lost the game, 66-25, playing a lot of new faces with not much experience on the court. Leading the way for the Devils were Stuart Anderson, Elijah Willis and Logan Bell.

The varsity Devils look to improve on a stellar 2013-2014 campaign, topping off with a conference championship and a regional semifinal appearance. The varsity squad returns six this year as it also has a lot of new faces, including juniors Brian Owens, Marshall Barrack, Chad Lewis, Clayton Ware, Zack Jarosz, Corey Cox and Hunter Hudgins, along with freshman Elijah Willis. The Devils hope to pick up their first wins on the year with an away game tonight in Northumberland, and Friday night home opener against Lancaster.
