Blue Devils beat two NN foes

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team picked up a pair of wins on the road recently against a pair of Northern Neck foes. On March 29, the Devils completed a sweep of the Northumberland Indians, winning 12-6. And, this past Thursday over spring break, Mathews defeated the Lancaster Red Devils, 3-1.

The March 29 contest against the Indians was shaping up to be a pitchers’ duel, but late in the second inning the Devils gave up some errors and a couple of hits to allow Northumberland to take a 3-0 lead.

Three runs was nothing to the Devils’ offense as they struck back with eight of their own. The rally starter was a base hit to centerfield by Cody Tunstall. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Devils’ starting pitcher got into a jam, so coach Pat Beattie had to make a change. Bases were loaded and Haden Higginbotham got the last two outs to end the inning, making the score 8-4.
