Blue Devil varsity soccer goes 1-1 in post-season play

After winning the opening round of the VHSL Class 1, Region A tournament, the Mathews High School soccer team’s 2021 season came to an end last Wednesday after falling to the top-ranked Rappahannock Raiders, 5-0.

Mathews, the #5 seed in the tournament, traveled to Northampton on Monday, June 14, shutting out the Indians, 3-0.

Senior Nasir Thomas scored two of the Devils’ three goals, also adding an assist. Carson Brown provided the other score for Mathews, while Fabian Cardenas and Dylan White had the other two assists. Senior Jackson Putt recorded 14 saves.

“This was their best all-around game of this season in my opinion,” head coach C.K. Ambrose said. “They moved the ball around, the defense played tough and they communicated well.”

Mathews found itself on the other end of a shutout last Wednesday. Putt had 40 saves in the loss.
