Blue Devil golfers edged by Lancaster

The Mathews High School golf team had two matches during the past week, and although the Blue Devils didn’t win either match, the squad did give Lancaster a tough battle on Tuesday, falling by four strokes.

Last Thursday, the MHS golf team traveled to Queenfield Golf Course in King William County to face off against King William and Essex high schools. KW won the match with a team score of 186, followed by Essex (202) and Mathews (210).

Mathews was led in the match by Chase Lewis, who shot a 48, his season best. Zach Dehoux was next, shooting a 50, and Cole Huff and Matt Jenkins rounded out the team score each shooting 56. Low scorer was Taylor Hubbard of King William, with a 36. Essex’s low scorer was Tristan Gross, who shot a 46.

The Blue Devil golfers played at the Piankatank River Golf Club against Lancaster on Tuesday, fighting hard but coming up a little short. MHS lost to the Red Devils, 189-193.
