Blue Devil running back Garrett Applegate (#24) looks to get around a Yellow Jacket defender in Friday night’s Mathews-Northampton varsity football game. The game, which was played at MHS on Ken Brown Field, was the Blue Devils’ season opener (a game the previous Friday, Aug. 27, against Middlesex was canceled and rescheduled for Oct. 15). The visitors from Northampton shut out the Blue Devils, 40-0. Mathews will look to break into the win column this Friday on the road against Lancaster. The Devils’ next home game is Sept. 24 against Rappahannock.
