The Mathews High School soccer squads traveled to Richmond County last Wednesday for a rematch with the Rappahannock Raiders from the week before.
In the varsity game, Rappahannock scored a quick goal to open play, putting two more in the back of the net before the first half ended.
Mathews made several improvements in the second half, earning several more shot attempts and maintaining possession for longer stretches. The Raiders managed to put another three goals past the Blue Devils’ defense. Mathews scored one goal in the second half of the match; a deflection from Lucas Nunnally inside the box opened up Carson Brown who scored the goal.
Although the varsity team lost, 6-1, the JV squad fared slightly better. The game proved to be much closer, as the squads finished once again in a tie. Rappahannock took a one-goal advantage in the first half, but the Blue Devils refused to go away. A second-half goal scored by Jake Hicks evened the score and sealed the tie.
