Black History Month

Mathews Memorial Library had a lively celebration of Black History Month on Saturday, Feb. 25, in spite of the rainy conditions. Children participated in arts and crafts while adults explored the various exhibits containing pictures and information related to Mathews and its long history of a close-knit community. Refreshments, including the library’s famous “secret punch,” were enjoyed along with the sounds of recorded renowned jazz performers. A special feature was a book signing by Gloria J. Savage, Ph.D., of Gloucester, shown standing at left with her husband, Wil Savage, seated. The author’s books, both enjoyable and inspirational, were the topic of discussion by visitors, including Libby Crawford, standing center, and Mary Sampson.
