Black Birders’ Week

A Black Birders’ Week birdwatching event was held on June 4 at Beaverdam Park. Sponsored by the Gloucester Branch of the NAACP, the Middle Peninsula Master Naturalists and the Middle Peninsula Bird Club, three NAACP branches were represented: Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex. The group spotted 26 species of birds at the park, with the highlight being an Orchard Oriole and a Prothonotary Warbler. Taking part were, from left, Louise Witherspoon, Mary Sampson, Robin Mathews, Gee Brownley, Carolyn Evans, Susan Crockett, Terry Dixon, Brenda Dixon, Twila Driver, Richard Dixon, Dean Vines, Josiah Turner and Edith Turner.
