Big weekend for MHS cross country teams

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed at the Milestat.com XC Invitational on Saturday in Mechanicsville.

The varsity girls’ team placed eighth out of 21 teams, beating one of its heated rivals in group 1A Auburn by seven points. Leading the charge for the Lady Devil harriers was Rileigh Betz who placed 52nd with a time of 21:17 (a season personal record). Following her was Skylar Lewis with a 21:18, also a season best. Rounding out the top eight for the Devils were Emma Hudgins (21:41), Reilly Price (21:52), Maddy Hobert (22:02), Tiffany Condron (22:18), Megan Johnson (22:37), and Alyssa Curko (22:46).

The varsity girls are in second place in the 1A state rankings, trailing first-place Radford by six points. The varsity boys’ team, meanwhile, placed 14th out of 25 teams, beating notable schools McLean and Clover Hill.
