BETTY JOYCE MOORE BOSWELL

Betty Joyce Moore Boswell died March 5, 2018 in Clayton, North Carolina.

Betty was born Sept. 28, 1928 to James Frank Moore and Verna Dell Gilley Moore in Meadowview, Virginia.

Betty graduated summa cum laude from University of Houston with a degree in Fine Art, attended other universities and also studied in Mexico. She taught art in New York and had over a dozen one-woman shows throughout her career along with placing her art in many galleries. She was commissioned by corporations, municipalities, and individuals for portraits, landscapes and murals. One mural in particular was painted on the cathedral ceiling of a multi-story home with images of angels visible from the street through the skylights.

She lived in Miami, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; Staten Island, New York, then Tucson, Arizona. She moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, then to Sedona, Arizona, and finally to Clayton. She used several signatures in her paintings and was recognized in “Who’s Who in American Artists” in the 1970s. She also won awards for textiles, clothing design and construction.

We cannot recall a challenge she did not accept and complete perfectly, even brick-laying, as evidenced by the newspapers where she lived. Betty and her husband Caney organized a dance troupe made up of seniors in Clayton performing for clubs and assisted living groups. Her hobbies included jewelry design for herself and friends and ballroom dancing. She looked forward to trips back home to reunite with her classmates and family.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, and her brothers, Robert David Moore and Fred Montgomery Moore.

She is survived by her husband, Caney Boswell, her brothers, James William “Bill” Moore and Jerry Douglas Moore (wife Katy) of Meadowview; her sisters, Mary Alice Moore of Baltimore, Maryland, Sylvia Sordillo (husband Tom) of Baltimore, and Linda Makowski (husband Larry) of Ware Neck, Virginia, along with dozens of cousins, nieces and nephews.

McLauren Funeral Home in Clayton was in charge of the arrangements. Betty was interred March 9 in Wilson, North Carolina, at Maplewood Cemetery.
