BETTY JEAN HOGGE

Betty Jean Hogge, 83, passed away peacefully at home on August 8, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 10, 1942 in Danville, Va., to the late E.W. Motley Sr. and Virginia Powell Motley. She moved to Gloucester in the fifth grade, making it her lifelong home. Betty Jean was a longtime, active member of Providence Baptist Church, having accepted Christ at an early age. She was a remarkable Christian woman who lived her faith daily, showing love, compassion, and selflessness to everyone, she met. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and kind heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years as a rural mail carrier in Hayes, where she was known for her friendly waves and cheerful greetings. Together with her husband, Tom, they raised a close, caring family, instilling in them the values of love, support, and being there for one another through both good times and hard times. Betty Jean loved attending her grandchildren’s events, cheering them on in every endeavor, and making each one feel special. She cherished time spent with friends, enjoyed shopping trips, and never passed up a sweet treat. She had a gift for making others feel welcome through a warm hug, a listening ear, or a simple act of kindness.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, John Firth IV, and her siblings, Eileen Horne, E.W. Motley Jr., Debra Haywood, and Cathy Motley. She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Tom Hogge; children, Eddie Hogge (Deanna), Michelle Firth (John), and Kelly Fowler (Jason); grandchildren, Mara Lenz (Daniel), Trevor Fowler (Makayla), Dylan Hogge (Loren), Ryleigh Brown (James), and Alex Wood; six great-grandchildren; sister, Dolores Rinaldo; special niece, Angel Bauman (Eric); great-nieces, Skyler and Faith, and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Providence Baptist Church, 3501 Providence Road, Hayes, Va. 23072, from 12:30-1:45 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2 o’clock, conducted by Pastor Nate Varnadore. After the service, the interment will be held at Rosewell Memorial Gardens Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Richard Croxton. The family would like to thank Riverside Hospice, especially Amber, Heather, and Michelle, for their kindness and care during this time.
