Betty Jean Harper Friend, age 92, of Gloucester, died at Riverside Convalescent Center-Mathews on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, with her family by her side. She was born to the late Hugh and Gladys Harper on April 28, 1930. She earned a Master’s Degree plus 30 hours. She was a retired elementary school teacher of over 35 years, teaching in Illinois, Ohio, and West Virginia. Betty went on to become a real estate agent of 20 years with Abbitt Realty in Gloucester. She was a long-standing member of Petsworth Baptist Church in Gloucester where she was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. Betty was well-respected and a much-loved member of the community. She was a giving, kind, gentle, loving, and supportive mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. She will be sadly missed. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Noel, and her brother, John Harper (Joan). Betty is survived by her children, Raymond Friend, Elizabeth Friend, and Angela Friend Waltrip (Thomas); grandchildren, Justin Wheeler (Alison), Joseph Wheeler (Shannon), Timothy Friend, Kevin Arden II (Lauren), Micheal Arden (Casey); great-grandchildren, Harper Wheeler and Jack Arden. The family received friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022, from 6-7:30 p.m. The inurnment will be private. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home & Crematory.
