BESSIE MAE PARKER HOLLOWAY

Bessie Mae Parker Holloway, 94, a resident of Poquoson since 1939 until she moved to Gloucester in 2012, passed away Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Before retirement, Bess was an LPN at Riverside Regional Hospital on the maternity floor, where she was a devoted nurse and loved her job. Bessie was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Poquoson, and served as Worthy Matron of Colonial Chapter No. 40 Order of the Eastern Star in Hampton. She was an avid square dancer with Square Edges, and Susie-Qs.

Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Norman H. Holloway Sr.; parents, Thomas and Pearl Parker Sr.; brothers, Russell Parker, Buddy Parker, Major Parker, and Tommy Parker; sisters, Sarah Hailey, Margaret Parks, Vina Higginbotham, and Louise Haughton, and son-in-law, Nelson Eddie Wood.

She is survived by her son, Norman H. Holloway Jr. (Judy); daughter, Gweneth H. Wood of Gloucester; five grandchildren, Daniel Holloway (Nancy), Julie Bryant, Molly Rivera (Joe), David Wood (Sharon), and Keith Wood (Lisa); 10 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 27 from 1-2 p.m., immediately followed by Bessie’s funeral service at 2 o’clock led by the Rev. Patricia Riggs, all at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson.  Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
