BENNIE HOWARD BELVIN

Bennie Howard Belvin, 79, of Achilles, died March 20, 2012 at his home.

Bennie was a native of Gloucester County and a member of Union Baptist Church.

A longtime waterman, he began working on the water at the age of 13 and was the founder and owner of Belvin Seafood Incorporated since 1968. He was the end of a great generation of watermen. His day began long before sunrise lasting until after sunset. It’s a hard job, but one that Bennie had a great passion for.

He was a mentor to many young watermen. His advice and guidance was solid, with his positive attitude, readiness to take on challenges and the ability to communicate with everybody.

As a devoted husband, father and brother, he leaves a legacy of accomplishments and respect for all. He will be missed by everyone in the community.

His parents, Howard and Hazel Belvin, and sister, Doris B. Rowe, preceded him in death.

He is survived by wife, Esther Mae Belvin; daughter, Myron Belvin Hall and husband Carlton; sisters, Catherine B. Ashe, Hazel B. Rowe and husband Francis, Frances B. Phillips, Sue B. Blake and husband Graham, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Richard Whiteheart were held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2012, at Union Baptist Church. Interment followed in Gloucester Point Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday, March 25, 2012, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

In memory of Bennie, contributions may be given to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.
