Bennie Coates Jr., “Pappy,” died Aug. 22, 2018 at the age of 70.

A Gloucester native he enjoyed the water and was a self-employed waterman. Bennie enjoyed fishing, watching football, especially when the Redskins were playing and baseball with the Cleveland Indians. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Bennie Coates Sr.; mother, Hilda Coates, and sisters, Patricia Williams and Carolyn Turlington.

He is survived by his son, Anthony Coates (Nikki); grandson, Austin Coates; uncle, Willie Coates Jr., and a host of nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Bill West at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, at Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 9117 Glass Road, Hayes, Va. 23072. Friends were asked to assemble at the cemetery. The family received friends Saturday, Aug. 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
