B&C Produce finds success down on the farm

“We don’t sell anything we wouldn’t eat ourselves and we grow everything we sell,” said Connie Leigh, relating how she and her husband Barry operate their business B&C Produce. Harvesting fresh vegetables for each season is what the Leighs have been doing since 2012.

When driving to the Leigh farm on Hall Town Road in Gloucester, one is immediately impressed by this enterprising couple farming ten acres of land and making a financial success from their efforts. It is like a mirror of a previous time with modern equipment.

Ten acres of their 21-acre farm are divided into quarter-acre sections.  Connie explained, “We send soil samples to Virginia Tech of each section, include names of crops we intend to plant in each and in turn they tell us what each section’s soil needs for its certain plant. We begin everything with seeds and replant to the fields from hot house.”
