BARBARA H. ROANE

Barbara Roane passed away peacefully in Gloucester, Va., on April 13, 2012 after a short illness.

The youngest of the six daughters of Harry and Alice Humphrey, Barbara was born in Connellsville, Pa., in 1927. She attended the College of William and Mary; a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, she graduated with the class of 1948. After graduation, Barbara began work in Washington, D.C., with the Department of the Navy.

Barbara married Ensign Donald P. ("Pete") Roane, USN, in 1952; their sons are Peter, Bob, and Pat. They have seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; eight nieces and nephews.

Barbara thrived as a Navy wife and mother, blessing the family with her remarkable grace, artistic gifts, and an enduring sense of humor.

After 35 years of Navy life, Barbara and Pete made their home at Old Office on the Piankatank River in Mathews County, Va.

Barbara’s creativity and leadership were often recognized by the Garden Clubs of Virginia, Mathews and Gloucester. Barbara also greatly enjoyed playing mah-jongg with the ladies of Gloucester and Mathews. She was a faithful parishioner of Ware Episcopal Church, devoting decades of service as a member of the Altar Guild and participating in many other church activities.

Services were conducted at Ware Church in Gloucester at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the mission and outreach programs of Ware Church.

Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, was in charge of arrangements.
