Barbara Elizabeth Novotny, age 85, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022. She was born on Sept. 18, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late August and Elizabeth Herrling. Barbara married James Anton Novotny on Jan. 7, 1956. She worked for more than 20 years in the finance department at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. When she wasn’t working, she loved to volunteer at the Bread for Life Food Pantry and at Gloucester Library. Barbara is survived by her husband of 66 years, James; her children, Nannette Nichols (Dana) of Hayes, Virginia; James Novotny Jr. (Jeannie) of Corolla, North Carolina; Joseph Novotny (Tina) of Gloucester Point, Virginia, and Pam Barclay (Bob) of Chesapeake, Virginia. Eleven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and sister, Judy Goetz (Jack) of Tennessee also survive her. A funeral mass, conducted by Father Jim Cowles, will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church on Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception in the parish hall.
