BARBARA ANN HAKEN

Barbara Ann Haken of Gloucester, formerly of Newport News, died Nov. 18, 2015 in Gloucester.

Born April 24, 1936 in Greensboro, N.C., Bobbie, as she was affectionately known, was raised in Reidsville, N.C., by her grandparents, Sidney Clay Pike and Margaret Apple Pike. She attended secretarial school and was employed by New York Life Insurance Company in Newport News for many years. She was a Life Master’s bridge player which is how she met her husband, John. After John’s death she began playing golf, which became a source of much enjoyment for her later in life. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. John W. Haken; her parents, Hazel Evelyn Bailey and Arthur Eugene Bailey; four sisters, and two brothers.

She is survived by her son, Douglas A. Hines and wife Cheryl of Gloucester; daughter, Sharon H. Whitt and husband Bob of Danville, Va.; grandchildren, Ashley Taylor and husband Ben, Jessica Hines, Holt Whitt and Drew Whitt; great-grandchildren, Kadin Hines and Rylee Taylor; and her sisters, Thelma Brooks and Sue Fox.

A graveside funeral service conducted by the Rev. Arthur Wolz Jr. was at held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Hampton National Cemetery. Friends assembled at the cemetery.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Heron Cove at Sanders No. 2 and Riverside Walter Reed Hospice for giving such loving care to our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

The family desires for any memorials to be sent to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, 7358 Main Street, Gloucester, Va. 23061.      

The family received friends at the home of Doug and Cheryl Hines, 5455 Crany Creek Drive, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
