Back-to-school sales strong in local stores

Back-to-school sales have been strong at area stores in recent weeks, a random check with some local merchants indicated.

Dollar General at Gloucester Court House sold a lot of totes to college students, store manager Kathy Shackelford said. And by Friday, more people had been stopping in to purchase pens, paper, binders and other items needed at local elementary, middle and high schools.

To bring attention to back-to-school items, special displays were set up in three different parts of the store. Book bags have been big sellers, with younger students grabbing those emblazoned with Paw Patrol, Frozen and Star Wars characters.

Hudgins Pharmacy in Mathews has a large assortment of school supplies, which employee Adrienne Haaf said brings in many customers before school starts and then again as supplies need to be replenished later in the term.
