AVFR still working to reach fund drive goal

Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Inc.’s 2014 fund drive is still trying to reach its $100,000 goal. A reminder mailing was sent recently, which helped bring the fund drive total to $88,437.85 last week, president Robert Parlett said Tuesday.

So far, 722 individuals and 45 businesses have made contributions to this year’s drive, he said.

The campaign began when solicitation letters were mailed in early December to approximately 8,000 residents of the squad’s response district, which covers the southern end of the county from Gloucester Point to Hickory Fork Road at White Marsh. Parlett said money is raised from the fund drive and through memorial gifts throughout the year.

Last year, the squad received $99,533 in donations, Parlett said, just missing its $100,000 goal.

Donations can now be made through PayPal or a credit card through the squad website at www.abingdonvfr.com; checks from individuals and businesses can be mailed to AVFR, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 2301...
