AUGUST FREDERICK ‘FRED’ SETTERHOLM

August Frederick “Fred” Setterholm, 74, of Hayes, died May 3, 2016. God’s heavenly fishing vessel descended upon us to take home yet another of our fishermen.

Fred was a kind and gentle man, and a man of many interests and talents. He loved fishing, boating, raking clams, building model boats and jewelry boxes. Fred enjoyed sitting around the table on a Saturday night and playing bluegrass music with his daughter and all the other musician friends he had. He wanted to make sure that all of his friends knew how very much he enjoyed and cherished spending time with them and talking, whether at Marvin’s, the railway, or the creek. Fred also wanted to thank the crew of the Abingdon Fire and Rescue for their friendship, kindness and diligence in what they do and all they did for him.

He was preceded in death by parents, Oscar and Virginia Setterholm; brother, Vernon Setterholm and his wife Liz; daughter, Mary Jo Setterholm; father and mother-in-law, Alton and Lucille Brown, and brother-in-law, A.J. Brown.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife, Betty Setterholm; daughters, Lou Sammons (Billy), Ericka Fox (Craig); special son-in-law, Karl Fox; sister, Nancy Kellum (Earl); special nephews and nieces that were his children as well and will always be his children, Billy Kellum (Gail), Carl Setterholm (Sharon), Oscar Setterholm and Kendra Irish (Mike); very special brother, Ronnie Brown, and special sisters, Joanne Brown, Gaynelle McNichols and Cathie Brown. Fred didn’t believe in the words ‘in-laws’ and whether by blood, marriage, or friendship he felt as if we were all children, parents, brothers and sisters. He would not have it any other way. Fred represented the true meaning of family.

Fred’s greatest accomplishments in life was his love and devotion to family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kandice Wauhop (Jesse), Joseph Fox, John, Becki, Ashlynn, Vernon, Gracie, Virginia, Micah, Lucas, Lil Jesse, Sophia, Katherine Irish, Colten West, Brandon and Matthew Kellum, and special girls, Desirea and Nicole West.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with time and place to be announced. Inurnment will be private. These were Fred’s wishes.

The family desires memorial contributions be made to Achilles Friends Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 28, Achilles, Va. 23001 or Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.
