Harris & Co. Auction House opened for business Oct. 1 on Route 17, Gloucester Point.
Owner Ben Harris Jr. runs his business from the building that most recently housed Carolina BBQ and once housed Poland’s Market. The building has 8,400 square feet and he sets up chairs in the large main room where auctions are conducted.
General auctions have been held so far, with the current schedule of one every other Friday night. But in the months to come Harris plans to hold some specialty auctions, where select artwork, sports memorabilia, or other items might be offered.
Also, he has plans to hold automobile and equipment auctions in his parking lot. He also conducts some estate auctions at other locations.
Harris is licensed as an auctioneer by the state, but has only been an auctioneer for a short time. He splits calling duties with Fred Wilson of Hampton, an auctioneer for more than 25 years.
Besides holding auctions, the auction house is open throughout the week for retail sales of jewelry, gifts, and some furniture and other items that have not been advertised for an upcoming auction. Some items are taken on consignment.
Originally from Gloucester, Harris is a graduate of Gloucester High School.
He resides at Bena with his wife, Carrie, a pharmacist at the Rite-Aid at Gloucester Point, and their son, Brycen, 2½.
