Aubrey Dean Hudgins Sr., 83, of Hayes, passed away peacefully Aug. 1, 2017.

Dean was a hard worker, having worked many trades, but his love for the water led him to be a skilled waterman for 60 plus years. He loved being outdoors and when he was not on the water, he would spend time hunting with his beagles.

He also enjoyed watching pro-wrestling and playing poker. Dean loved his family, being a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, giving everyone nicknames: Melody’s is Chick Big and Terry’s is Chick Little. His memory will live always in the hearts of those who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edrie Hudgins; his son, Aubrey D. Hudgins Jr., and brother, Wesley Hudgins.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley Oliver Hudgins; his sister, Virginia Hudgins Lewis; daughters, Melody Seys (Michael) and Terry Hassell (Chris); grandchildren, Kenn Deaton, Dennis Deaton (Maggie), Amber Deaton, Stephanie Hodges (Brandon), Brandi Scott (Eric), Ashley Wood (Travis) and Brittany Hassell (Jason); great-grandchildren, Guinevere, Ezra, Ethan, Kristina, Morgan and Madison.

Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Chris McMillan and the Rev. Alvin Downs was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, at Providence Baptist Church. Interment with military honors followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
