The Gwynn’s Island Civic League Foundation congratulated John Stephen Shaw as recipient of the $500 Atherton scholarship. Shaw is a 2025 graduate of Mathews High School. He was a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, All-Academic Football and Basketball and was an American Legion Boys’ State Representative. He will attend Southside Virginia Community College in the fall studying in their Power Line Training Program. The Atherton scholarship is awarded annually to a student with ties to Gwynn’s Island furthering their education at a community college or trade/technical school. The scholarship is in honor of the late Joe Atherton, whose vision brought the foundation to existence four years ago.
