At 93, Vivian Vail is still an avid gardener, artist

Vivian Vail has always enjoyed gardening, and she was working in her yard last week, raking leaves and weeding the border gardens, but she said that these days she has to take a break more often than she used to because of knee problems.

While she might have slowed down a bit, the 93-year-old Hallieford resident still pursues her interests in gardening and art as much as possible. A folk artist, Vail has a number of her paintings and carvings on display in her home, and she was recently asked to create some new pieces, but she said she has trouble getting up the stairs to her studio these days, so that might have to wait.

“I still fool with it,” she said, “but not like I used to.”

Vail said she enjoyed past times when she has served as chair of the annual Mathews Woman’s Club Art Show or participated in the annual fashion show, and she continues to attend club meetings and serve on the home life committee as much as possible. She is a lifetime member of...
