Arthur, the Atlantic’s first named storm of the season, is heading its way up the East Coast. Although a direct hit on our area is unlikely, the storm is predicted to affect parts of Virginia on Friday and could put a damper on July 4 celebrations.

Currently a tropical storm, Arthur is expected to gain strength today to become a Category 1 hurricane, possibly making landfall along the North Carolina coast either late tonight or the early morning hours Friday. Most hurricane models show the storm veering east and north up the coast, clearing out of our immediate area by Friday evening.

“At this point, Arthur’s projected path looks as if it will bring impacts to Virginia,” said Jeff Stern, state coordinator for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. “Everyone needs to pay attention and take necessary precautions, regardless of the July 4 holiday.
