Arlington skipper wins 50th annual Governor’s Cup Regatta

Albacore skipper Barney Harris of Arlington, won the Governor’s Cup during the 50th annual Governor’s Cup Regatta hosted last weekend by the Ware River Yacht Club. Competing against eight other Albacore skippers, Harris won four of seven races and was second in two others.

Overcast skies with occasional drizzle and a light breeze made for less than ideal regatta conditions, but the racing was competitive, according to event chairman Clayton James. Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross) was on hand Sunday to present the top trophies.

Ian O’Connell, representing the WRYC sailing team, won the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce Trophy as the top performing junior sailor. O’Connell topped the Laser Radial class with two wins and second-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes. 

Also in the Laser Radial class, JEB Hutson was second and Catesby Jones was third.
