Area bridges getting much-needed attention

The region’s aging infrastructure is getting some much-needed attention, with several bridges in Gloucester and Mathews either under repair or due for construction projects soon.

Kelly Hannon, Communications Manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation, Fredericksburg District, said the southbound bridge over the Dragon Run on Route 17 in northern Gloucester has been under construction since May, and work will continue until the project’s completion in August 2021.

Like many of the other bridges under construction in the area, Hannon said this bridge is a State of Good Repair project. This program provides funding for deteriorated pavements and poor condition/structurally deficient bridges owned or maintained by VDOT and/or localities, as approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.

The work being done to the bridge is for rehabilitation, said Hannon. When finished, the bridge will be wider, and new steel beams will be installed onto the existing structure.
