Aqua Queen contestants

Contestants for Miss Aqua Queen posed in 1964 just before Gwynn’s Island Day, held in mid-July. From left are Katharine Hudgins, Mary Linda Hudgins, Gayle Jarvis (who was runner-up) and Cheryl Hearn. Not shown are Judy Hugate, who became the queen, and contestant Shirley Hudgins. The crowning ceremony took place July 18 at Callis Wharf aboard a yacht. Other events included a water-skiing exhibition, sculling races, boat races, fishing demonstration, pony show and men’s beauty competition, along with a bazaar, fish pond for children and miniature train display.
