Apartment fire

Firefighters from the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., responded to a structure fire Monday that was called in just before 5 p.m. in this two-story, eight-unit apartment complex on Oakdale Court in Hayes. When units arrived, they found smoke coming from the back wall of a center unit. According to AVFRS spokesperson Robert Parlett, the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation, was discovered by a neighbor who noticed smoke coming from a light fixture on the rear of the building. Parlett said that a maintenance man for the complex broke in the rear door of the unit and rescued several dogs from the apartment, as the occupants were not home at the time. The maintenance man then broke out a kitchen window that was adjacent to the fire and used the sink sprayer to control the fire until firefighters arrived on scene, he said.
