The advanced placement African American History class from Heritage High School, Newport News, visited the Woodville School on Route 17, Ordinary, on Oct. 15.
Woodville Rosenwald School Foundation representatives gave the students a brief history of Rosenwald schools including Woodville, providing insights into the realities of school life for African American students during the Jim Crow period when schools were separate for students of color.
The 15 students, taught by Janika Worthington, saw artifacts recovered in an extensive archeological survey of the Woodville school site by archaeologist Dr. Colleen Betti. The students also viewed videos interviews of former Rosenwald students.
The group continued their historical tour of Gloucester, with lunch at Holly Knoll at Cappahosic, a visit to the Gloucester History Museum, and a walk down Main Street to see the T.C. Walker mural....
