Antique gun collection goes on the auction block later this month

Gun enthusiasts with a love of history will be in paradise at a special estate auction to be held at the end of the month.

Harris & Co. Auction House, Gloucester Point, will be auctioning a local large antique coin and firearms collection that has been 50 years in the making, according to owner and auctioneer Ben Harris Jr. The auction will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28.

“The auction will include over 100 antique firearms,” Harris said. That number does not include the daggers, bayonets and other local relics such as Indian tools and clay pipe heads that will also be available. The items are part of a collection from a Gloucester resident who wishes to remain anonymous.

Harris said guns spanning the 1700s to just beyond World War II will be up for bid. Historical pieces such as a Harpers Ferry model rifle, which was considered the workhorse of the Civil War, and 1890s-era Navy Colt revolvers will be for sale.
